Cannabidiol or CBD affects our endocannabinoid system, and more specifically, the receptors contained in it. The whole system generally has the task of maintaining the internal balance of the body. Read more about the endocannabinoid system here. Thanks to this compatibility, CBD is used as a complement to conventional treatment methods, including: neurodegenerative diseases, epilepsy, sleep disorders, multiple sclerosis or, for example, autoimmune diseases.

However, CBD oil is most often used by people suffering from chronic pain, lack of sleep, depression, anxiety disorders or stress. Detailed contraindications to the use of CBD

Before we move on to the contraindications of using CBD in any form, let us remind you that cannabidiol has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a safe substance with zero toxicity that does not cause addiction. However, there are several undesirable symptoms that have been noticed by some people using cannabidiol. These were: dizziness, lower blood pressure, temporary dryness in the mouth, and increased drowsiness. These types of effects may result, for example, from the wrong dose, or the interaction of CBD with drugs.

CBD dosage

If we are already talking about the wrong dose, it is worth remembering that it is always individual. It all depends on age, dosage, our metabolism and of course body weight. It is also very important what exactly we want to take CBD for. Different doses will be appropriate when supporting the treatment of epilepsy, others when used for stress and sleep. If CBD is to be used to support the treatment of more serious diseases for which we are already taking medication, always consult a doctor. In other cases, it is recommended to start with the minimum dose, i.e. a few drops 2 to 3 times a day and gradually increase the dose as necessary. In this way, we will find the one that is most suitable for our body.

CBD drug interactions

When taking any medications, we should be aware that most substances, even natural ones such as cannabidiol, can interact with them. There may be a change in the absorption of a given drug, or an increase in side effects. Why it is very important to consult the use of CBD with a doctor when taking medications. It is generally accepted that it is better not to combine CBD with drugs metabolized in the liver due to the fact that in some cases, when taking CBD in large amounts, liver enzymes can be reduced.

It is recommended to give up or monitor CBD intake with your doctor while taking such drugs as: antidepressants, antipsychotics, painkillers - opioids, naproxen; immunosuppressants, drugs used during chemotherapy, anxiolytics - benzodiazepines; anticoagulants - clopidogrel, warfarin; proton pump inhibitors, drugs affecting the operation of calcium channels, or an anti-allergic drug - montelukast.

Some drugs can increase or decrease the absorption of CBD by our body, which increases the risk of choosing the wrong dose. Which may be associated with the lack of feeling the effects or with the appearance of the side effects mentioned above. In such cases , dose reduction or increase should be considered as appropriate .

Drugs with which increased bioavailability of CBD has been noticed:

  • Loperamide - an opioid antidiarrheal drug,
  • Ketoconazole - an antifungal drug,
  • protease inhibitors,
  • Fluoxytin - an antidepressant,
  • Nefazodone psychotropic antidepressant drug,
  • Imatinib – used as a drug to treat cancer.

Drugs with reduced bioavailability of CBD:

  • Phenobarbital and carbamazepine - antiepileptic drugs,
  • Antibiotic - rifampicin.

CBD oilsAt the moment, the use of CBD oils in pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding is not recommended. There are not enough studies evaluating the safety of using CBD in these cases.

To sum up, the main factors contributing to the side effects of CBD are: the potency of CBD (absorption), the selected dose, the route of administration (vaporization, transdermal, oral) that affects the amount of CBD absorbed by the body, the origin of the CBD preparation or product, and drug interactions . Remember that when taking CBD, the most important thing is to choose the right dose, have CBD from a good source, and in the case of taking other drugs, consult a doctor.
