Does the color of marijuana affect its effects?

Where do the colors of marijuana come from?
The color that different parts of the plant take on is the result of the presence of plant pigments. The most abundant pigment in plants is chlorophyll. In the case of cannabis, different colors can take on both leaves, buds, hairs and pistils. Plant pigments come in the form of chemical compounds, otherwise known as phytochemicals. The best-known and most common pigments in plants are:
- mentioned above chlorophyll. Chlorophylls are chemical compounds that give the plant its green color. They play a very important role enabling plants to carry out the process of photosynthesis.

- Anthocyanins, a group of compounds belonging to the class of flavonoids. Anthocyanins, or anthocyanins, are found in large amounts, for example, in blackberries, blueberries, red cabbage or eggplants. Anthocyanins are thought to protect the plant from UV radiation, but also attract insects and animals that help the plant pollinate. In the case of this group of compounds, their color will depend on pH and temperature. It turns out that in an acidic environment they appear as red colors, in an alkaline or neutral environment they will be blue or violet. In addition to pH, anthocyanins are also sensitive to higher temperature or the presence of certain metal ions in the environment.
- The other connections are carotenoids responsible for the colors orange, red, pink and yellow. Carrots are probably the best example of the presence of a large amount of these compounds in the root of the plant. Carotenoids are well-known antioxidants. They support the process of photosynthesis, but also protect cells against the effects of reactive oxygen species. The color of carotenoids is usually masked by a large amount of chlorophyll. Yellow and orange shades of autumn leaves are the result of carotenoids and the result of the breakdown of chlorophyll.
How to grow colorful marijuana strains
There are several factors that affect the color of marijuana. These are mainly environmental factors such as temperature or pH of the environment. In addition, the hemp development cycle itself will change the color of its leaves or buds, just as it happens with the leaves of trees turning yellow in autumn.
We can influence the aforementioned environmental factors. Especially in the case of indoor marijuana cultivation. One method of extracting beautiful colors from cannabis is to gradually reduce the temperature at the end of the flowering phase and simultaneously reduce the number of light hours. This naturally happens in the case of outdoor marijuana cultivation, when autumn approaches, the temperature drops and the days become shorter. Many times in the descriptions of so-called colorful genetics of marijuana seeds, producers mention exposing the plants to lower temperatures at the end of flowering, among other things, in order to extract more intense colors from them.
However, the most important thing in obtaining marijuana in beautiful exotic colors is genetics and seed quality! Genetics is associated with the presence of a specific type and amount of the above-mentioned plant dyes in the grown hemp. And so there will be varieties, e.g. with more carotenoids or with more anthocyanins.
The quality of the seeds proves their germination and genetic stability. This means nothing more than that with well-established genetics, there is a greater chance that your plant will be very similar to the one presented by the manufacturer. Of course, if you don't screw something up badly along the way. Therefore, if you care about shades of purple or blue in your garden and buy good seeds Blueberry from reputable manufacturers, you should not be disappointed. Of course, taking into account the manufacturer's instructions.
Are colored marijuana strains more potent?
Apparently, it used to be believed that the intense colors of marijuana have something to do with its potency, i.e. the psychoactive effect it causes. It is now known that this is not true. The psychoactive effect is mainly due to the cannabinoid THC, and the natural plant dyes described in this entry do not have a similar effect.

Is it worth choosing a colorful variety of marijuana?
We already know that the intense, exotic colors of cannabis have nothing to do with the effect it causes. So what is the upside of choosing colorful marijuana genetics? The main plus is the visual effect! If you live in a country where cannabis cultivation is legal, you can create beautiful color and scent combinations in your garden! Just think how beautiful marijuana bushes would look in orange colors, right next to red ones and somewhere further in beautiful, deep purples...
In addition to the pleasure for our eyes, it is worth remembering about the described functions of plant dyes. Protective functions, repelling pests, animals, i.e. marijuana whose leaves have turned dark, black, may be less attractive to animals! As you know, not one animal has tried tasty hemp. In addition, the aforementioned antioxidants present in carotenoids could be a nice health addition when consuming flowers. However, this is only a loose guess, because we did not delve into whether, for example, when drying buds, they retain their antioxidant functions. Nevertheless, let's face it, the most important argument in favor of buying seeds of colorful marijuana varieties is that it will simply be nice, cool and that's it 😉.
