Institute of Biotechnology of the Agricultural and Food Industry prof. Wacław Dąbrowski National Research Institute, under the joint management of Marek Roszka, Marcin Sokołowski, Prof. Ph.D. engineer Artur Hugo Świergiel and the Lachowski brothers (Rafał Lachowski and Jakub Lachowski), achieved historic success. In December 2023, the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspector granted the institute the first permit in Polish history to cultivate and harvest hemp other than fiber in order to produce pharmaceutical raw material.. The facility located in the Lublin Voivodeship has successfully passed documentation verification and met the safety requirements specified in the Act of March 24, 2022.
This step is groundbreaking for the hemp industry in Poland. Institute of Biotechnology of the Agricultural and Food Industry prof. Wacław Dąbrowski PIB, cooperating with Cannabisland and Plantalux, proved that despite complicated legal regulations, it is possible to produce medical marijuana in Poland.

The first packages of medical marijuana appeared in Polish pharmacies January 17, 2019. From that day on, patients with the appropriate prescription can easily purchase medicinal marijuana. Unfortunately, the price of the drug turns out to be too high for many people in need. Polish patients certainly hope that the fact that the first permit for the cultivation of medical marijuana in Poland has been issued will result in the price of the drug falling.

A groundbreaking act of March 2022 regarding hemp in Poland
Already in March 2022, Poland introduced an act that included changes to regulations regarding hemp cultivation. The Hemp Act increased the permitted THC level in hemp from 0,2% to 0,3%, but more importantly allowed the cultivation of medical marijuana on domestic soil. Of course, after meeting many conditions, including obtaining the necessary permits issued by the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate.

The Biotechnology Institute of Agriculture and Food Industry has taken on the leadership role in the production of medical marijuana. The Institute of Natural Fibers and Herbal Plants in Poznań (IWNiRZ), which is the only institution in Poland that has declared its willingness to grow medical hemp, has not yet completed this task. There is a belief among the hemp community in Poland that the Poznań institute's activities focus mainly on obtaining funds and subsidies, and the lack of progress in the field of medical cannabis cultivation is a source of disappointment.
In response to these concerns, the Institute of Agricultural and Food Biotechnology decided to take action. The Institute announced plans to start growing medical marijuana in Konopnica near Lublin.
It should be emphasized that the project of the Institute of Biotechnology of the Agricultural and Food Industry lasted over a year. Its development was significantly accelerated by the partners who joined the initiative. Among them was the Cannabisland company and the brothers Rafał and Jakub Lachowscy, co-owners of the Plantalux company, which specializes in the production of LED lighting for growing plants.
The project of the Institute of Biotechnology of the Agricultural and Food Industry arouses great interest due to its solid preparation and support of experienced players in the hemp industry. All that remains is to wait until their work bears fruit and Polish medical marijuana will be a medicine to which all patients in need will soon have unrestricted access.
